Trip from Raftsundet to Trollfjord

We stayed in a small holiday cabin in Høynes in the Lofoten for the first week of August this year. A summer holiday in the Lofoten is by no means guaranteed good weather, but today we were in luck. The panorama below shows the view from our cabin in the morning.

The previous day we had driven a long way and put the boat in the water only to be thwarted by some strong wind, so I was a bit apprehensive about doing the same thing again today. However, I'd wanted to visit Trollfjord for quite a long time and today was a good opportunity.

Trollfjord is a narrow and steep sided fjord, which is well known because every day one of the Hurtigruten ships squeezes through the entrance with minimal room to spare so that passengers can see the walls of fjord up close. It was fun to look up at the steep northern side of the fjord from our tiny inflatable, but it would have been even more impressive if the Hurtigruten had been there to emphasise the scale.

Having ogled at the steep sides of the fjord we landed on a beach at the bottom to ate lunch. There were a lot of moon jelly fish (Auralia aurita) in the water near the beach. Moon jellies don't sting, but I still wasn't too excited about wading ashore in bare feet. Later in the evening we noticed that our camera flash made the pigmented parts of the jellies fluoresce and we entertained ourselves flashing at them for a while.

Sandwiches eaten, we hiked up to a lake a few hundred meters above the fjord called Trollvatnet. The lake is artificial and was created to supply a small hydroelectric station at the bottom of Trollfjord. The walk up to the lake provided some really spectacular views, but the dam retaining the lake is not a thing of beauty.

On our way home we stopped the boat and did a bit of fishing in Raftsundet, but it was late evening by then and getting chilly, so we didn't hang about too long.

By the time we had deflated the boat and driven back to the cabin it was after midnight and we were really tired, but it was a good trip nonetheless.
